Romaine Mundle
Sunderland AFC has issued a strong statement condemning the alleged online racist abuse directed at Romaine Mundle, following the player’s decision to delete his Instagram account. The club has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy on discrimination and is actively collaborating with authorities to address the issue.
Sunderland AFC said: “There is no place for racism in our society, and we stand with Romaine, who has our full support. The club is actively working with the relevant authorities and online platforms to identify those responsible, and we will take the strongest possible action available to us. There are serious consequences for anybody found guilty of discrimination and we will offer our full support with their investigations.”
This incident is not the first time Mundle has faced such abuse. Previously, he shared a screenshot of a discriminatory message received via Instagram, prompting Sunderland to reiterate their commitment to fighting discrimination. The club has consistently pledged to work with authorities, the EFL, and social media platforms to protect its players from such behavior.
Despite ongoing campaigns across English football to eradicate racism, players continue to face online abuse, leading to calls for stronger regulations and sanctions. Sunderland’s statement coincided with Wolverhampton Wanderers’ condemnation of similar abuse directed at their player, Tolu Arokodare. Wolves also published screenshots of the offensive messages, describing the behavior as “abhorrent and unlawful.”
Wolverhampton Wanderers said: “There is no place for racism – in football, online, or anywhere in society. We condemn this abhorrent and unlawful behaviour in the strongest possible terms. Tolu has our full and unwavering support. No player should be subjected to such hatred simply for doing their job. We stand firmly alongside him, and alongside all footballers who are forced to endure this abuse from anonymous accounts acting with apparent impunity.”
Both clubs have reported the incidents to the relevant platforms and are working with the Premier League and authorities to ensure appropriate action is taken. The persistence of such issues highlights the need for continued vigilance and action to combat racism in football and society at large.
