Manchester United have been encouraged to consider Diego Simeone for the role of permanent head coach. This suggestion comes from pundit Andy Townsend, who shared his views on the potential appointment with Boylesports. Townsend expressed his belief that Simeone’s approach to football aligns well with the demands of the Premier League, even if it might not entirely satisfy United’s fanbase.
Andy Townsend said: “I don’t think Antonio Conte would be the right fit. Out of all of them, the one manager I would like to see at United is Diego Simeone.”
Townsend elaborated on why Simeone could be a strategic choice for Manchester United, emphasizing the need for the club to regain competitive ground against rivals like Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal.
He said: “I think his football and the way his Atletico Madrid team have played is kind of more suited to the Premier League. I don’t think his style of play would please the United fans. They want something more flamboyant. But at the moment, United need to get back on level terms with the likes of City and Liverpool and try to get ahead of Arsenal. I don’t think you want someone who’s talking about the beautiful game.”
However, Simeone’s history with Manchester United fans is not without its challenges. During a previous encounter at Old Trafford, the Argentine manager was targeted by bottle-throwing supporters after Atletico Madrid eliminated United from the Champions League. Despite the hostility, Simeone maintained composure, swiftly heading to the away changing room.
He said: “Nobody knows what a man like Simeone and his type of energy would do at United. We’ve seen him play like Antonio Conte when he was at Chelsea and he won the Premier League with that kind of management. More from Limpar. Simeone is so demanding, even with his own son, to play more than the other ones, and the work rate from Atletico’s players is unbelievable. Imagine having a manager who demands so much of his players at Arsenal, Liverpool or United? He would have them working like mad dogs.”
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane also voiced his support for Simeone’s potential appointment, highlighting the manager’s ability to instill a fighting spirit and bring a strong personality to the club.
Keane said: “I’ve said it for years, but I’d like to see Atletico Madrid’s Simeone go in there. I know his mate (Andrea Berta) has gone to Arsenal, but I think he would just create havoc, good havoc.” He added, “I think he would rock up to that place and say ‘this is how you do things’. There is no guarantee, but I’d just like to see his personality there with his track record.”
Simeone’s demanding nature and track record of success with Atletico Madrid present a compelling case for his consideration as Manchester United’s next permanent manager. While his style may diverge from United’s traditional expectations, his potential to rejuvenate the team’s competitive edge cannot be overlooked.
