Dennis Bergkamp
Dennis Bergkamp has recently shared his admiration for Harry Kane, highlighting him as an ideal striker in today’s football landscape. The Arsenal legend’s comments come at a time when the Gunners are grappling with their own striking options. Despite Arsenal’s strong performance in the Premier League and Champions League, the club has faced criticism over its current forward lineup.
Dennis Bergkamp said: “At the moment, the ideal strikers – how we knew them like Marco van Basten – it’s Harry Kane and Robert Lewandowski. And Karim Benzema – I used to teach young strikers a lot using his movement. It was unbelievable. I tried to put that into the heads of the strikers I worked with in the youth teams as well because his runs were amazing.”
Bergkamp continued: “The big ones, in my opinion, are Harry Kane and Robert Lewandowski. Erling Haaland is, of course, there as well, but the big ones – they’re not around in the same way anymore, so you have to settle for a different style of football, or for a different type of striker – and that’s what you get now.”
Bergkamp’s comments underscore a broader issue facing top clubs, including Arsenal, in finding world-class strikers who fit the traditional mold. Arsenal’s recent signing, Viktor Gyokeres, has faced scrutiny for his performance since joining the club. Meanwhile, Kai Havertz, although versatile, has been sidelined due to injury, and Mikel Merino has been filling in despite his primary role as a midfielder.
The discussion around strikers is particularly relevant as Arsenal aims for silverware under Mikel Arteta’s leadership. The Gunners are currently performing well in both domestic and European competitions, including reaching the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. As Arsenal continues to target major trophies this season, Bergkamp’s insights highlight the evolving nature of the striker role and the challenges clubs face in adapting to these changes.
