Manchester United secured a crucial 2-0 victory against local rivals Manchester City, with interim manager Michael Carrick at the helm. The win has sparked optimism among fans and pundits alike, but former United captain Roy Keane has offered a sobering perspective on the club’s ambitions for the season.
Roy Keane said: “You’re at home, you’ve got players available, you could have had a man sent off. Timing, a little bit of luck, they’ve made the most of it. Take nothing away from them and I’m happy to give credit where it’s due, they were fantastic today; but everybody just calm down.”
Keane continued: “What’s his target, to finish fourth? Fifth of course would get into Europe, but fourth is realistic. And you’re sitting here thinking; ‘That’s what Manchester United should be thinking’. We shouldn’t be scratching our heads and going; ‘Can United finish fourth’? In the last week or two when we’ve been doing games and we’ve been disappointed in United, we’ve been saying; ‘Fourth is a realistic target’. In the last few months we’ve been saying, because of the way the league is at the moment, there is a chance for United to finish fourth; it’s not miracles we’re talking about here.”
Keane added: “If he gets to fourth and doesn’t get the job, it’ll still leave Carrick to go and get a job somewhere- because people will go; ‘Look at the way he’s handled himself, he’s been great, he’s been cool, and their players have been positive’.”
The victory over Manchester City was a testament to Carrick’s tactical acumen and the squad’s ability to compete at the highest level. Bryan Mbeumo was among the standout performers, showcasing the depth of talent within the team. Despite the impressive display, Keane’s comments serve as a reminder of the challenges that lie ahead.
Keane’s insights highlight the competitive nature of the Premier League this season, with several teams vying for the coveted top-four spots. While Manchester United’s recent form has been encouraging, consistency remains key to achieving their objectives. The club’s ability to maintain high-quality performances will be crucial as they navigate the remainder of the season.
