Dean Smith Manager
In a heartfelt discussion on the Claret & Blue podcast, former Aston Villa manager Dean Smith expressed his admiration for Jack Grealish, reminiscing about the player’s significant impact on the club. As Grealish prepares to return to Villa Park with Everton, Smith shared insights into their shared history and the transformative role Grealish played in Aston Villa’s recent successes.
Dean Smith said: “I couldn’t be prouder to see what he’s gone on and done. People still criticise and ask did we lose him a little bit as a player at Man City? But look at what he did there, look at the trophies he won there. I can only be proud of him as a lad. He’s from a wonderful family, and he’s such a family kid. I suppose my only disappointment for him was the reception he got when he came back to Villa.”
Smith continued: “I still believe there should be a statue of him outside the academy building as somebody who came through as an Aston Villa fan and got sold for £100 million to help the club get to where they are now. What a really good human being he is first and foremost. My relationship with Jack still goes on.”
Grealish’s return to Villa Park is highly anticipated, marking his third appearance since his high-profile transfer to Manchester City in 2021. His previous visits have been met with mixed emotions from the Villa faithful, ranging from jeers to applause. Despite the varied reactions, Smith believes Grealish’s contributions to the club deserve lasting recognition.
Reflecting on his time managing Grealish, Smith recalled pivotal moments that shaped the player’s career. One significant turning point was a conversation in October 2018, where Smith encouraged Grealish to improve his statistics to achieve his career aspirations. This advice proved influential, as Grealish went on to score crucial goals and increase his assists, playing a key role in Villa’s promotion and Premier League survival.
Smith explained: “I said to him, Jack you’re not going to go and do the things you want to do in your career unless you improve your stats. I had to make him understand that. All of a sudden he started to take notice. He started producing in the final third to the levels you want to see from a player of his quality.”
Smith’s decision to appoint Grealish as captain was another masterstroke, instilling a sense of responsibility and pride in the player. Under his leadership, Villa achieved a remarkable run of victories, securing their place in the Premier League. Smith fondly remembered Grealish’s journey from a young fan to a club icon, highlighting his talent, determination, and occasional mischief.
As Grealish returns with Everton, Smith remains one of his staunchest supporters, cherishing the memories and achievements they shared at Villa. While the reception from fans may vary, Smith’s appreciation for Grealish’s legacy at Aston Villa is unwavering.
