Idrissa Gueye Everton
Idrissa Gueye, the seasoned midfielder for Everton, is on the cusp of sharing a significant milestone with his compatriot Iliman Ndiaye. As Senegal prepares for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, Gueye reflects on his role as a mentor to Ndiaye, whom he affectionately calls his ‘grandbrother.’ The duo has been instrumental in Senegal’s journey to the final, where they will face host nation Morocco, aiming for their second AFCON title.
Idrissa Gueye said: “He’s a humble guy. A very, very good guy. He’s not shy – he likes to play and joke with everyone. Nobody ever has a problem with him because he is humble and always keeps working hard. You see in those videos even from when he was very young how hard he works and it’s because he always wants to be better.”
Idrissa Gueye said: “I challenge him every game, every time we play. I’m always speaking to him. He’s a good boy, he listens a lot and, yeah, I’m like his… grandbrother I always knew he would be successful here at Everton and, honestly, I don’t think he’s shown his best yet. I train with him every day, so I see his quality every day and I can see what he is capable of. He just needs to believe in himself, keep working hard and have high expectations of himself. I told him when he first arrived here that he can be the next African Ballon d’Or winner, because he has the quality, he has the technique, he has the skills and everything.”
Gueye’s influence on Ndiaye extends beyond the pitch at Finch Farm, where he has consistently encouraged the young midfielder to push his limits. This mentorship is rooted in their shared international goals, which have driven both players to excel. Gueye, who was pivotal in Senegal’s historic first AFCON victory in 2022, remains a key figure in the national team. His leadership and experience have been vital in guiding Senegal to another potential triumph.
The relationship between Gueye and Ndiaye exemplifies the importance of mentorship in football. Gueye’s belief in Ndiaye’s potential is evident, as he envisions him as a future African Ballon d’Or contender. This confidence is not unfounded, given Ndiaye’s demonstrated skills and work ethic. As Senegal gears up for the AFCON final, the partnership between Gueye and Ndiaye will be crucial in their quest for glory.
