Nathan Ake
Nathan Ake, the Manchester City defender, is facing a challenging situation as he strives to secure his spot in the Netherlands squad for the upcoming World Cup. With the tournament just six months away, Ake’s limited playing time at the Etihad Stadium has become a concern for both the player and Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman. The Dutch coach has emphasized the importance of regular football for Ake, who remains a key figure in the national team setup.
Nathan Ake said: “He has said to me a few times actually that he wants me to play more and sometimes it is difficult to call me up if I don’t play a lot, that’s obvious. Every player wants to play as much as possible while also appreciating that the team is doing really well and the players in my position are doing really well so I have to keep going and wait for chances. The only thing I can say is I keep fighting every time. I twisted my knee and felt something weird the whole game actually every time I passed. We’ll see but I think if you can carry on for 90 minutes it should be fine.”
Ake’s comments came after Manchester City’s Premier League draw with Sunderland, where he made just his third league start of the season. The 30-year-old is competing for a place in the team against high-profile teammates such as Josko Gvardiol, Ruben Dias, and Abdukodir Khusanov, while John Stones is currently sidelined with an injury. Despite being a senior figure under Koeman, Ake’s lack of regular minutes has prompted speculation about a potential move in the January transfer window.
The situation is further complicated by Ake’s recent knee issue, which he described as feeling “weird” throughout the match. However, he expressed optimism about his fitness, noting that completing the full 90 minutes was a positive sign. As the transfer window approaches, interest from various clubs could offer Ake the opportunity to secure more playing time and strengthen his case for World Cup selection.
For Ake, the coming months will be crucial as he navigates his future at Manchester City and his ambitions on the international stage. The defender’s determination to fight for his place, coupled with Koeman’s encouragement, highlights the delicate balance between club commitments and national team aspirations.
