Tottenham Hotspur faced another setback in their Premier League campaign as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Liverpool at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Despite a spirited performance, Spurs were unable to overcome the challenges posed by two red cards, leaving them with their 11th home defeat of the year. The match highlighted the ongoing struggles for Thomas Frank’s side, who are now grappling with maintaining form and consistency.
Arne Slot said: “I thought it would mean that it would be a bit more easy but it wasn’t! They still had a free-kick and I thought against nine we would keep them away from our goal but it looked like we had nine and they had 11 as they kept attacking.” He added to the BBC: “It’s unbelievable if you play against nine men that I would not be surprised if for the nine minutes they had the ball for eight-and-a-half. That is not what you expect, and maybe that tells you where we are in this season.”
Thomas Frank told football.london: “The first red which I have seen before, I also said before definitely a few times at Brentford and I have seen others, I don’t like this as a red card. I think the game is, probably too big to say gone, but for me it’s not reckless and it’s not exceptional force. He is chasing Van Dijk. He is trying to put pressure and then he changes direction. Unfortunately, his foot is on his Achilles.”
Frank continued: “I think the second goal is a mistake from the ref. I think there are two hands in the back. Clear two hands in the back. I don’t understand how you can do that.”
The match was marked by controversial decisions and a resilient performance from Spurs, who, despite being reduced to nine men, managed to keep Liverpool at bay for significant periods. Tottenham’s fans showed their appreciation for the team’s effort, applauding their fight and determination. However, the loss leaves Spurs in a precarious position, sitting 13th in the Premier League table, a point worse off than last season.
The game also saw Cristian Romero’s disciplinary issues come to the fore again, as he received a second yellow card in added time. His dismissal added to Spurs’ woes, highlighting the need for better control and discipline on the pitch. Meanwhile, Liverpool capitalized on their numerical advantage, with Alexander Isak scoring the decisive goal after a defensive error from Romero.
Looking ahead, Tottenham faces a challenging period without key playmaker Xavi, who will miss upcoming matches due to suspension. The absence of his creativity and ability to raise the tempo will be felt as Spurs prepare to face Crystal Palace, Brentford, and Sunderland.
The defeat underscores the need for stability and progress at Tottenham, as 2025 has been a year of turmoil despite a silverware triumph. With significant changes in the club’s hierarchy and ongoing struggles on the pitch, Thomas Frank and his team must find a way to turn their fortunes around quickly to avoid further disappointment.
