micky van de ven
Micky van de Ven has quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s top defenders since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Wolfsburg in August 2023. The Dutchman has formed a strong centre-back partnership with Christian Romero, contributing significantly to Spurs’ Europa League triumph last season, marking their first major trophy in 17 years. In a recent interview on the Overlap, van de Ven discussed his experiences in English football, his relationship with Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, and his aspirations for the future.
Micky van de Ven said: “We have a good relationship – we speak on the pitch, and I also speak with him off the pitch. Everybody can see he’s an unbelievable defender. It’s always good to play next to him because you always know what he can do.”
Van de Ven’s connection with fellow Dutchman Virgil van Dijk is set to play a crucial role as they prepare to anchor the Netherlands’ defense at the upcoming World Cup finals. The Tottenham defender expressed admiration for van Dijk’s abilities, highlighting the value of playing alongside such a seasoned and skilled player.
He added: “Last season, we played against Newcastle in the game we lost and I slipped, Alexander Isak was different level. At this point, I knew he was a top player. I always knew he was good, but this game was when I saw it first-hand.”
Reflecting on a challenging match against Newcastle United, van de Ven acknowledged the exceptional talent of Alexander Isak, who impressed him during their encounter. This experience underscored the competitive nature of the Premier League, where every game presents its own set of challenges.
He explained: “Our aim for this season is to make sure that we’re playing Champions League football again. Top four or five is what we want. Every team in the Premier League is good. Every away game is tough, and even at home. If you’re feeling 90 per cent before a game, you’re likely to lose or drop points. Everyone can beat everyone, and the league is crazy.”
Van de Ven emphasized Tottenham’s ambition to secure a top-four finish, ensuring their return to the prestigious Champions League. He noted the unpredictable and competitive nature of the Premier League, where even a slight dip in form can result in lost points. The defender highlighted the league’s intensity, with every team capable of causing upsets.
He concluded: “Look at a team like Aston Villa, at the start of the season, they were struggling, but now, they’re just behind Arsenal. This time of the season, around December and January, I think this is when we’re going to start seeing the gaps forming in the Premier League table.”
As the season progresses, van de Ven anticipates a clearer picture of the league standings, with teams like Aston Villa demonstrating resilience and climbing the table. His insights reflect the dynamic and ever-changing landscape of the Premier League, where fortunes can shift rapidly.
