Andoni Iraola
AFC Bournemouth showcased remarkable resilience as they came from behind three times to secure a draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Despite a shaky start, where the home side dominated and took an early lead, Bournemouth managed to level the score multiple times, even creating opportunities to clinch victory in the dying moments of the match. The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, with the Cherries demonstrating their fighting spirit and tactical adaptability.
Andoni Iraola said: “This is really difficult to explain. Really difficult. There were moments even in the stoppage time where you wanted the game to finish because it’s okay, at the end you take one point. But the next 10 seconds you were wait, wait, wait, because we are very close to scoring and then the momentum goes for us and then you lose the ball and then maybe it’s better it finishes. A lot of up and downs. It’s one point for us. It’s not a lot, but we also enjoyed the game, we’ve gone behind. I think if you ask me about the football side, I think United has been much better than us the first 20 minutes until we matched [up with them]. We changed Alex Jimenez and then we controlled better this side with Amad and Mbeumo and from there I think I finished quite happy with the performance. With the mistakes with especially the second goal. We concede the corner when we were playing better, probably with the 1-1 and finishing strong the first half and you concede this sloppy goal. But overall I feel happy apart from these 20 minutes where they started much, much better than us.”
Bournemouth’s performance was a testament to their resilience and tactical adjustments. After falling behind in the opening exchanges, they responded with a brilliant goal from Antoine Semenyo. Despite conceding again to a Casemiro header, the Cherries remained undeterred. Evanilson’s equaliser and Marcus Tavernier’s stunning free-kick gave Bournemouth a temporary lead, showcasing their attacking prowess. Junior Kroupi’s late equaliser ensured the visitors left Old Trafford with a deserved point.
Andoni Iraola’s tactical decisions played a crucial role in stabilizing Bournemouth’s performance after a challenging start. The introduction of Alex Jimenez helped the team regain control, particularly on the flanks, as they managed to contain Manchester United’s attacking threats. While Iraola acknowledged the superiority of Manchester United in the early stages, he expressed satisfaction with his team’s overall performance, particularly their ability to recover from setbacks and maintain pressure on the opposition.
This match not only highlighted Bournemouth’s fighting spirit but also underscored their potential to challenge top teams in the Premier League. The draw at Old Trafford serves as a significant morale boost for the Cherries as they continue their campaign, aiming to build on this resilient display in future fixtures.
