Reece James
Chelsea are set to face Everton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, aiming to bounce back from a recent setback in the UEFA Champions League. The Blues were defeated by Atalanta, who came from behind to secure a crucial victory. Joao Pedro initially put Chelsea ahead, but Atalanta equalized and eventually took the lead through Charles De Ketelaere, securing three vital points in the race for knockout stage qualification. As Chelsea prepare for their Premier League encounter, Reece James has taken proactive steps to inspire his team, particularly after a series of disappointing performances against lower-ranked sides.
Reece James said: “When I got the role, it was quite difficult. I wasn’t fit on a regular basis; it was quite start-stop, so to have the impact on the team I wanted was super difficult at the start, but the more I’ve played and stayed healthy, it’s been much easier to grow into that role.”
Enzo Maresca said: “Most of the time when they are captain, they think that because they are captain, they have more, ‘because I am the captain, I expect that you give me more’. For me, because you are the captain, you have to give more. You have to give more than the rest. And sometimes it’s, ‘okay, I am the captain, I can give less,’ no. He’s one of the captains and I expected from him, and his teammates expected from him, to give always more in terms of leadership in general. He is a reserved guy, but not only him. I think we don’t have a proper leader. We don’t have those guys. Probably Tosin [Adarabioyo] is one of the guys that is. So the rest we need to build them.”
Chelsea, currently the youngest team in the Premier League with an average age of 24 years and 185 days, will look to their captain, James, to lead by example. Despite his initial struggles with fitness and consistency, James has grown into his role as captain, a position he assumed in the summer of 2024 under manager Enzo Maresca. The Chelsea boss has emphasized the need for James to provide more than just the title of captain, urging him to enhance his leadership qualities.
The upcoming match against Everton presents an opportunity for Chelsea to demonstrate their potential, having already secured victories against top teams like Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Barcelona this season. However, Everton, the oldest team in the league with an average age of 28 years and 125 days, pose a formidable challenge, having won four of their last five Premier League matches.
As Chelsea aim to return to winning ways, the leadership of Reece James will be crucial in navigating the team through this critical phase of the season.
