Liam Delap
Chelsea endured a significant setback during their goalless draw against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, as striker Liam Delap sustained a shoulder injury. The incident occurred in the 30th minute when Delap collided with Bournemouth defender Marcus Senesi during a corner, forcing him to leave the pitch with his shirt acting as a makeshift sling. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca confirmed the injury, adding to the team’s mounting challenges.
Enzo Maresca said: “He was already out two months and he has to be out again. We don’t know for how long but it looks quite bad, his shoulder. He has been unlucky. We are a bit unlucky because we need that kind of number nine. We tried today it with Marc.”
Enzo Maresca continued: “We missed some quality in the last third. Many mistakes, missed passes in the last third, moments where we could shoot. It’s normal mistakes that can happen, the last pass in the last third. Cole was quite good on that, he played an hour today. It’s important for him to build physical condition. A lack of quality in the last third but we know that we’re not going to score every game.”
The injury to Delap is a blow to Chelsea, who have been struggling to find consistency in front of goal. Teenager Marc Guiu was brought on as Delap’s replacement but failed to make a significant impact in what turned out to be a largely forgettable match. Despite a lackluster first half, Chelsea showed improvement after the break, creating several opportunities to secure a win. Pedro Neto forced a good save from Bournemouth’s goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, while Alejandro Garnacho’s header struck the post. Cole Palmer, making his first start since September, also had a chance but shot directly at the keeper.
Bournemouth, who had slipped to 14th in the league after losing four of their previous five matches, were the more dominant side in the first half. They were kept at bay by Chelsea’s goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who made crucial saves to deny Marcus Tavernier, Alex Scott, and Antoine Semenyo. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, highlighting their defensive solidity.
Andoni Iraola said: “Probably we were the team closer to winning it. You have to value the point because we were facing a very good team. Everyone defensively has done his job. I’m happy because we looked like us, like a solid team. It’s a game that allows you to be a little bit more of yourself. Against Everton (a 1-0 defeat on Tuesday) the rhythm was very slow. They played closer to a style we prefer.”
Chelsea’s inability to capitalize on Arsenal’s earlier defeat means they missed an opportunity to close the gap at the top of the table. The team will need to address their attacking inefficiencies and find a solution to Delap’s absence as they prepare for upcoming fixtures.
