Unai Emery
Aston Villa demonstrated remarkable resilience as they battled back from a two-goal deficit to secure a thrilling victory over Brighton. The match, held at the Amex Stadium, saw Ollie Watkins play a pivotal role, scoring twice to restore parity before half-time. Despite a late scare from Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke, Villa held on for the win, thanks in part to Marco Bizot’s crucial save in added time.
Unai Emery said: “He scored in different ways: in the box and from a long ball behind the defence. It was a great finish. With Ollie, he gives me confidence when he is working. Hopefully, we can keep the balance and get his numbers up.”
Emery added: “Watkins worked like he does in every match, but today he scored goals. Today we reacted like the season. We started poorly in August. Today we didn’t start well. The first goal shouldn’t have been a corner. We are adding experiences and today was one more.”
Emery told BBC Match of the Day: “A very tough match. The players reacted and continued with our game plan to never give up. We kept the mentality and the resilience, really fantastic. The first goal was not a corner, I think. We conceded and then we were expecting a lot. We are so thankful for the supporters – more or less 3,000 of them came from Birmingham. The table is very important for us. We know how difficult it is. We needed to work hard and perform. We will play on Saturday against Arsenal at home. The teams behind us are going to push a lot. Be humble because we know how difficult it is to face teams in the Premier League.”
Watkins’ return to form is a significant boost for Villa, as the striker had been struggling with just one goal in 19 matches this season. His brace against Brighton not only relieved the pressure on him but also highlighted his ability to score in crucial moments. Watkins’ first goal was a classic poacher’s finish, while his second showcased his anticipation and skill.
Marco Bizot, stepping in for Emi Martinez, who was sidelined due to back pain, redeemed himself after a shaky start. Despite conceding early, Bizot made a crucial save in the dying moments to deny Danny Welbeck an equalizer, ensuring Villa’s victory.
Unai Emery’s passionate touchline presence was evident throughout the match, particularly when he expressed frustration with Evann Guessand’s positioning. Emery’s animated reactions underscored his commitment to maintaining tactical discipline and his determination to guide Villa to victory.
As Villa prepares to face Arsenal next, Emery’s side will look to build on this victory, knowing that the Premier League’s competitive nature demands consistency and resilience.
