Everton vs Liverpool Derby
Liverpool is poised to host Everton in the highly anticipated Merseyside derby today, aiming to extend their flawless start to the Premier League season with a fifth consecutive victory. Meanwhile, Everton, under David Moyes’ management, could leap to second place in the league with a win. Both teams have shown strong form, making this encounter a pivotal moment in the early stages of the season.
Alan Shearer said: “The Merseyside derby is a great derby. The respect is there between both football clubs. I lived in Merseyside for four years when I played for Blackburn, so I understand it. There’s huge respect between fans and I imagine they’re great games to play in. I’ve been to them myself.”
Shearer continued: “David Moyes seems to be getting what he wants at Everton – obviously not the finished product. And Liverpool have spent an absolute fortune. They’ve not played well at all yet this season in the league, but they’ve won four from four games which has to be a worrying sign for the rest of the league.”
He added: “I guess Liverpool are still trying to figure out a system that works for everyone going forward. Defensively there aren’t too many issues, certainly not in the last league game. In forward positions, they’re still trying to get the best out of Wirtz. They obviously have another huge player in Isak who made his debut on Wednesday night.”
Shearer concluded: “I wouldn’t be too concerned about not playing well and winning games. That must be a positive. Tough one to call but Liverpool at Anfield, won four from four in the league without playing well and Isak made his debut on Wednesday in the Champions League, so I’ll go for a home win.”
Liverpool’s recent performances have sparked discussions, especially considering their substantial financial investments and the quality of their squad. Despite not hitting top form, the Reds have managed to secure victories, a testament to their depth and resilience. The late goals, such as Virgil van Dijk’s header against Atletico Madrid and Mohamed Salah’s penalty at Turf Moor, highlight their ability to deliver under pressure.
Big-money signings Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz are under the spotlight. While Isak recently made his debut, Wirtz’s performance against Atletico Madrid was one of his most promising since joining from Bayer Leverkusen. These players are expected to play pivotal roles as the season progresses.
Historically, Everton has struggled at Anfield, failing to secure a win in front of a crowd in the 21st century. David Moyes, despite his extensive managerial experience, has yet to taste victory at Liverpool’s home ground in 22 attempts. This derby presents an opportunity for Everton to break the trend and make a significant statement early in the season.
As the teams prepare to clash, all eyes will be on Anfield to see if Liverpool can maintain their unbeaten run or if Everton can pull off a surprise victory.
