Cole Palmer
Enzo Maresca is set to provide an update on Cole Palmer’s injury status ahead of Chelsea’s return to Premier League action against Brentford. The attacking midfielder has been absent since the opening day of the season, following Chelsea’s goalless draw with Crystal Palace. Palmer was initially set to play against West Ham United but withdrew due to a pre-existing issue, not an injury sustained during the warm-up.
Enzo Maresca said: “Cole in the last four or five days was not 100%. He tried the warm-up, but he felt something. So we prefer not to take any risk to get worse. And we’ll see if it’s something important or not. The Palace game, he was not 100%. But he is trying to make a big effort for the club, for the team, for the fans. He tried again, but it was not very good.”
Stephen Smith, CEO and founder of Kitman Labs, said: “It is an ongoing thing with Palmer they appear to be managing. The fact he was able to go out and warm up [before the West Ham game] and felt it there, I think what you are seeing there is a very conservative and mature approach to managing a very valuable asset. I wouldn’t be too concerned, I imagine he is being very well looked after.”
The Chelsea management has been cautious with Palmer’s condition, opting for a conservative approach to safeguard his long-term fitness. This strategy is reflective of the club’s commitment to managing its valuable assets prudently. Despite the eagerness to have Palmer back on the pitch, Maresca might opt to rest him for the Brentford match, especially with a crucial Champions League fixture against Bayern Munich on the horizon.
Chelsea is also dealing with other injury concerns, with some players expected to make a return soon. However, the club is wary of rushing players back to action prematurely. Meanwhile, Brentford faces its own injury challenges, with several players, including Gustavo Nunes and Yunus Emre Konak, listed as doubts. Vitaly Janelt, who has been sidelined since April, recently resumed training but is unlikely to feature in the upcoming match due to his prolonged absence.
As Chelsea prepares for its upcoming fixtures, fans eagerly await Maresca’s update on Palmer and the potential return of other key players. The club’s cautious approach underscores its focus on player welfare and long-term performance.
