Enes Unal, the Turkish striker, continues to face a challenging road to recovery following a severe anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained in January. This marks the second time Unal has suffered an ACL tear, with the previous incident occurring during his time at Getafe. Manager Andoni Iraola has emphasized the need for patience, highlighting Unal’s commitment to rehabilitation while acknowledging the complexities involved in his recovery process.
Andoni Iraola said: “He’s not close. I wish he was closer because I think he’s an important player for us but has started running and doing some things alone. The one he had is just the ACL, but it’s the second ACL in the same knee. Sometimes you have the second ACL but it’s the other knee and more or less is easier. But this one is the second one. So we cannot also rush him. Right now I want to have Enes as close to his level as possible. If it takes two more weeks, let’s give him two more weeks. If he takes one more month, one more month. He’s very professional in his recovery. He will do whatever he can. He spends here more hours than anyone, for sure. He’s the player who spends more hours here. But he has a big injury and right now he’s not close. He’s not close to training with us. But I hope we can have him in one moment before Christmas, definitely, I hope if everything goes well. But it’s not close.”
Unal’s injury, a recurrence of a previous ACL tear, presents a significant challenge, particularly as it affects the same knee. This type of injury often requires a cautious approach to rehabilitation to prevent further complications. Iraola’s comments underscore the importance of not rushing Unal back into training, despite the team’s eagerness to have him return to the field.
The manager’s remarks also highlight Unal’s professionalism and dedication, as he reportedly spends more time at the training facility than any other player, focusing on his recovery. While there is hope for Unal to rejoin the team before the Christmas period, Iraola’s cautious stance reflects the unpredictable nature of ACL injuries and the necessity for a tailored recovery timeline.
Unal’s absence is undoubtedly felt by the team, given his potential impact on the squad. However, Iraola’s emphasis on a patient and measured approach to Unal’s rehabilitation is a testament to the club’s commitment to ensuring the player’s long-term health and performance.
