Van Hecke
Brighton defender Van Hecke has shared insights into his ongoing rivalry with Manchester City’s prolific striker, Erling Haaland. Despite Haaland’s impressive record of scoring six goals in six matches against Brighton, the Norwegian’s team has only managed two wins, two draws, and two losses in those encounters. Brighton, notably, has remained unbeaten in their last three meetings with City, including a recent 2-1 victory at the Amex Stadium.
Van Hecke said: “I think Haaland knows who I am by now. I’ve been playing in the Premier League for four years now, and when you face each other every season and have tough matches, something naturally develops. I think that’s great, and I think he does too. That’s what you play in this league: you want to push each other to the limit. When you play against Haaland, you have to be ready; otherwise, he’ll eat you up.”
Van Hecke’s remarks highlight the mutual respect and competitive spirit that exists between him and Haaland. The Dutch international acknowledges the challenge posed by facing top-tier strikers like Haaland, Alexander Isak, and Ollie Watkins, but he embraces these encounters as opportunities to test his abilities against the best in the league.
Van Hecke added: “In the Premier League, you naturally encounter so many different types of strikers. For example, I’ve faced Isak, Haaland, and Watkins. They’re all different types of strikers. Ultimately, you have to make sure you can handle everyone. But I think it’s great: when you hear all those names, you realise you’re playing against the best of the best. You can measure yourself against them every week.”
Van Hecke’s comments reflect his confidence and determination to excel in the Premier League, where he has been a consistent presence for Brighton over the past four years. His ability to adapt and compete against various styles of play is a testament to his skill and resilience as a defender. As Brighton continues to hold its ground against formidable opponents like Manchester City, Van Hecke’s performances will be crucial in maintaining their competitive edge.
