Sunderland has intensified its pursuit of Colombian center-back Jhon Lucumí by submitting an improved bid to Bologna as the Premier League’s transfer window nears its conclusion. The Black Cats are determined to secure Lucumí as a priority signing, offering €28 million (£24 million) plus a 10% sell-on clause in an effort to sway Bologna’s stance.
Fabrizio Romano reported: “Sunderland send improved bid to Bologna for Jhon Lucumí worth €28m [£24m] plus 10% sell-on clause. SAFC want Lucumí as priority target but Bologna insist on keeping the Colombian centre back.”
The situation remains uncertain as to how Bologna will respond to Sunderland’s latest offer. The Italian club has been steadfast in its desire to retain Lucumí, despite the player’s ambition to move. Last week, Bologna CEO Claudio Fenucci reiterated the club’s reluctance to part ways with the 27-year-old defender.
Claudio Fenucci stated: “Jhon had the ambition to leave, but unfortunately, the timeframe for the offer didn’t materialise. It’s natural to feel a little disappointment, because our relationship with the club has always been human. Last year we were asked to stay and we did so with great availability. This year, however, since the beginning of the season, the message has always been clear on both sides: if the right offer had arrived, Jhon would have had the possibility of a transfer. I therefore hope that on the part of Bologna there can be a reflection that allows us to find a balanced and positive solution for everyone.”
Lucumí’s potential transfer has been a topic of interest throughout the summer, with Sunderland keen on bolstering their defensive options as they prepare for the challenges of Premier League football. The Colombian international’s performances in Serie A have attracted attention, making him a coveted target for several clubs.
Bologna’s firm stance on keeping Lucumí underscores the player’s value to the team, yet the improved offer from Sunderland could test their resolve. As the transfer window deadline approaches, both clubs will need to weigh their options carefully to reach a resolution that satisfies all parties involved.
