Leny Yoro
In the latest Premier League encounter, Manchester United’s Yoro found the back of the net, scoring the team’s first goal of the 2025/26 season from a Bryan Mbeumo corner. Despite this, United’s quest for a win remains unfulfilled, as they secured only one point from their opening two matches. The match was further marred by controversy when Bruno Fernandes missed a crucial penalty in the first half. Fulham’s Bassey voiced strong objections to Yoro’s goal, asserting it should have been disallowed due to a foul.
Bassey said: “It’s the same as my one, it’s a foul [Yoro push]. He’s pushed me and stopped me getting to the ball. When the referees look back it, they’ll be disappointed.”
He added: “I can’t say too much before I get a fine. Not enough force? Come on. It’s a foul. When you go up to jump, any little touch can put you off. He’s got two hands [on me], how much force do you need? I told him, they’ve got a rule only the captain can speak to him, they haven’t checked it. I’m not really sure [why he didn’t check it], he’d only speak to the captain, maybe they have, maybe they haven’t. What do you want me to do? Jump on the floor, it’s enough to not let me win the ball, it’s a disadvantage, it should be disallowed.”
Bassey’s comments highlight the ongoing debate regarding officiating standards in the Premier League, particularly concerning the use of VAR. The incident underscores the challenges faced by referees in making split-second decisions that can significantly impact the outcome of matches. Manchester United’s struggle to secure a win early in the season raises questions about the team’s form and strategic approach under manager Ruben Amorim. As the season progresses, United will need to address these issues to improve their standing in the league.
