Aston Villa’s slow start to the new Premier League season continued with a defeat at Brentford, leaving the team struggling to find the form that saw them achieve top-four and top-six finishes in recent campaigns. The match in west London saw Villa manage only two shots on target, a far cry from their previous attacking prowess.
Youri Tielemans said: “Last season is gone. It’s up to us to do better, to improve as a team and just get wins in. We have to learn, improve and hopefully get a week of good work and get a win next week. We know we can do better and we just didn’t do that. I think we’re going to have to analyse the game and see what was missing, but it’s true that some moments we were playing a bit too slow and could’ve done some better actions.”
The closest Aston Villa came to scoring was in the first half when John McGinn’s shot was expertly saved by Brentford’s goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher. In the second half, Emiliano Buendia missed the target twice, while Morgan Rodgers was thwarted by a crucial block from Brentford’s summer signing, Michael Kayode.
Youri Tielemans added: “Just the last pass or the last shot was missing. They defended well as well, so credit to them for their good defending, and it’s up to us to do better next time.”
Villa’s current goal drought extends over three Premier League matches, dating back to the end of last season when they were defeated by Manchester United, missing out on a Champions League spot. The team now faces the challenge of reigniting their attacking flair and securing victories to climb the league table.
