Granit Xhaka
Sunderland has officially announced the signing of Granit Xhaka as their seventh addition in the summer transfer window. The Swiss midfielder joins the Black Cats from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal reportedly worth £17.3 million. Xhaka, 32, brings a wealth of experience to Sunderland, having won a Bundesliga title and a DFB-Pokal during his time in Germany. He also achieved a commendable 16th place in last season’s Ballon d’Or voting. Sunderland’s head coach, Regis Le Bris, expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, highlighting both the player’s qualities and the club’s recruitment efforts.
Regis Le Bris said: “First of all, it’s a massive statement about the attractiveness of the club. If a player of that dimension says yes to our project, it means something. It makes a big noise and that is something we are looking to do this season. For the squad, it’s really important. We started our recruitment with talented young players but the second layer is to balance the squad with more experience. With what he has achieved in the game, Granit is really good for that.”
He added: “It’s really clear what he will bring to the squad. At the same time, his level is high. He brings many things for the balance of the squad. He’s a captain, a leader, has strong experience in the Premier League and the national team. This piece in our structure will be really important to balance the squad. We’re really happy.”
Xhaka’s arrival at Sunderland is seen as a significant boost to the club’s ambitions in the Premier League. The midfielder’s leadership qualities and extensive experience are expected to play a crucial role in balancing a squad that has been bolstered by young talent. Sunderland’s sporting director, Kristjaan Speakman, also endorsed Xhaka’s signing as a testament to the club’s ambition and commitment to building a team that can compete at the highest level. The club is eager to integrate Xhaka into the team and is optimistic about the impact he will have both on and off the pitch.
