Joe WILLOCK
Newcastle United fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Joe Willock’s injury, sustained during a pre-season friendly in South Korea, is not as severe as initially feared. The midfielder, who was stretchered off after a collision against the K-League XI, has reassured his teammates that the injury is not significant. Despite the scare, Willock’s condition appears manageable, and he is hopeful for a swift recovery.
Eddie Howe said: “I don’t have a major update yet but it didn’t look great on the pitch. But at this moment, it doesn’t look like a major, major injury. Fingers crossed it’s not, because Joe has suffered enough. Hopefully he’s OK.”
In addition to Willock’s encouraging update, Newcastle’s Sven Botman, who had a groin concern earlier in the tour, remains with the squad. Botman showed no signs of distress as he walked back to the team bus, suggesting he may be fit for selection against Tottenham Hotspur in their upcoming fixture.
Manager Eddie Howe also reflected on the team’s performance against the K-League XI, acknowledging the challenges faced in the match. Despite the defeat, Howe found positives in the team’s display, particularly under the tough conditions they encountered.
Howe said: “It was a really good test for us. Very tough conditions. We are disappointed to lose because after the second half performance, I thought we should have got something out of the game. The K-League’s fitness levels are mid-season and you could tell they had that sharpness and experience of playing in this heat. The first half we started well and then faded in terms of our attacking intent. You want tough games and we will have got a load out of it physically which is what pre-season is for. We want to win and score goals but the most important thing is the Aston Villa game.”
The pre-season tour has been a rigorous test for Newcastle United, providing valuable insights into the team’s fitness and readiness for the upcoming Premier League season. The final game of the tour is set for the weekend, and the squad is focused on concluding their preparations on a positive note. Newcastle fans will be eagerly anticipating the return of key players like Willock and Botman as the season approaches.
