AFC Bournemouth has announced plans to expand the Vitality Stadium to a capacity of 20,500 seats. This development aims to accommodate more fans, particularly those seeking season tickets, and to create a more inclusive environment for families. The expansion will primarily focus on general admission seats, with 8,600 of the additional 9,215 seats designated for this purpose, while maintaining the current level of hospitality seating. The club also hopes to reduce ticket prices as part of this initiative.
Jim Frevola said: “We don’t know exactly, but our expectation is to be introducing more affordable options for tickets, too. The club would also ‘love’ to host other events at the ground, like they did when Chris Billam-Smith won his world title at the stadium. We won’t have that. So it’s always going to be challenging to have a massive amount of events. What we do want though are the private events. So we do proms here, we do functions, Christmas parties, holiday parties. We do a lot of that already. This will be a much bigger space for some of those things. What the goal for all of this is, is for the current supporters that don’t have season tickets, that are max points holders, is to get them season tickets and to get their family members season tickets. I want to bring my grandkids and I can’t. We want them to be able to bring their kids and their grandkids. That’s the whole reason why we’re doing this. It’s not about day trippers. This is about bringing your kids and your grandkids that are Bournemouth supporters to the football matches that have not been able to get here because the ground has been limited. It’s 100 per cent about that.”
The expansion project is not only about increasing capacity but also enhancing the overall matchday experience. Plans include a new fan zone in the southwest corner and expanded offerings around the stadium. This initiative is intended to encourage fans to arrive earlier and stay longer, thereby reducing congestion. The club aims to create a seamless experience by implementing perimeter ticketing, allowing fans to enjoy various stadium activations without the need for re-entry queues.
Frevola continued: “Well, really it’s not even just the fan zone, it’s the entire building, right? We’re going to ticket you on the perimeter, so that once you’re in, you’re in, and you don’t have to worry about queuing again a second time to get into the stadium. But we’re going to have activations all around the stadium, the new fan zone that we’re planning in the southwest corner, the existing Great Escape that’s already there, making that better. Also having weather protection behind the north stand, more weather protection underneath the east stand by virtue of going backwards and creating a few more rows. You’re naturally creating, call it a tunnel, so you’ll have weather protection. We’ll do some more fun activations behind the north, behind the east. The biggest will be the new fan zone in the south stand. We’ll have a ton of space underneath that’ll be weather protected under there. So all of the areas, not just the new fan zone on the south corner that you’ll see images on, that’ll be cool. That’ll be a nice little touch.”
The club has conducted light surveys to ensure minimal impact on nearby residents due to the stadium’s expansion, particularly concerning the north and east stands. The hospitality offerings will also see improvements, with the main stand’s second-floor extension providing additional covered terraces. Frevola emphasized the importance of balancing growth with sustainability, ensuring that the club remains a competitive force in the Premier League without overextending its resources.
Frevola concluded: “It’s what this club’s needed. I know people are going to say that, you know, we should have gone bigger, we should have built new. All of those are fair points to talk about, but we’ve done a lot of work behind the scenes. But we also have to be mindful that, if we overbuilt something and overextended it could put the football at risk. And we can’t do that. We’ve got to remain a sustainable achieving Premier League football side. And we don’t want to jeopardize that because we overbuilt the stadium.”
The expansion of the Vitality Stadium marks a significant step forward for AFC Bournemouth, reflecting their commitment to enhancing fan experience while maintaining financial prudence.
