David Moyes
In a pivotal move for Everton, manager David Moyes played a critical role in securing Michael Keane’s future at the club. Despite being linked with a potential exit, Keane’s performances and professionalism convinced Moyes to push for contract renewal talks, ensuring the defender remains an integral part of the squad.
David Moyes said: “He’s a great boy and showed his professionalism as we’ve had injuries to (Jake) O’Brien and (James) Tarkowski and we looked different at the back.”
Keane’s future at Everton had been uncertain, with interest from clubs in Italy and England over the past 18 months. The defender’s contract situation remained unresolved, unlike teammates Seamus Coleman and Idrissa Gueye, who were swiftly offered new deals. As Everton explored options, Championship and newly-promoted Premier League clubs expressed interest in Keane. The club even lined up a replacement, reaching a fee agreement, before Moyes intervened to initiate fresh talks with Keane.
Tarkowski said: “The two lads who have not been playing recently, Keano and Ben Godfrey, it is easy to forget about them a bit because me and Jarrad are playing, but they have been excellent, supporting us from behind, helping us.”
Keane’s value to Everton was highlighted when he played a crucial role against Burnley, scoring in a match that was pivotal due to Everton’s points deduction. His performances at the end of the season, particularly against Fulham and Newcastle, showcased his importance to the squad. Despite starting the upcoming season as the fourth-choice centre-back, Keane’s experience and familiarity with the club make him a valuable asset.
The decision to retain Keane reflects Moyes’ preference for stability and continuity, especially during a transfer window where Everton faces significant squad rebuilding. Keane’s knowledge of the club and proven capabilities made him a clear favorite for Moyes, who had previously worked with him at Manchester United. This familiarity negated the need for a new signing, saving valuable resources.
Keane’s journey at Everton has been marked by highs and lows, but his resilience and ability to perform under pressure have been commendable. His recent form, coupled with his willingness to play through injuries, has solidified his place in Moyes’ plans. As Everton prepares for a new season, Keane’s presence offers a blend of experience and reliability, crucial for the team’s ambitions.
