Tommy Doyle, a former Manchester City midfielder, has become a hot commodity in the transfer market as Wrexham, Birmingham City, and Sunderland reportedly vie for his signature. The 23-year-old is currently with Wolves, where he has struggled to secure regular playing time under manager Vitor Pereira. Doyle, a product of Manchester City’s youth system and the grandson of club legends Glyn Pardoe and Mike Doyle, initially joined Wolves on loan before making the move permanent last summer for a fee of approximately £4 million.
Pep Guardiola said: “He is a good player, it’s not the first time playing in the games. He’s a player with a special quality. He takes it, shoots. Another Man City fan. Tommy, what a great player.”
Vitor Pereira said: “Technically-speaking, he’s a very good player, but in my opinion he’s missing the physicality to face this league. We are not a team to have 80 per cent of possession, so he has problems. If we are a team that has the ball every time, doesn’t allow counter-attacks and keeps the ball to dominate the opponent, this is the team for him. But we need to understand that we face top teams, top players. We need to run a lot and he’s missing this physicality, especially when we play with two midfielders. With three midfielders, I believe he is a 10 with high quality. The last pass, shots, crosses – he has those skills.”
Doyle’s potential departure from Wolves has been fueled by Pereira’s concerns about his suitability for the team’s counter-attacking style. Despite his technical prowess, Pereira has expressed doubts about Doyle’s physicality, which he believes is necessary to compete in the Premier League. The manager’s comments suggest that Doyle could thrive in a team that prioritizes possession and ball control, which might explain the interest from clubs like Wrexham, Birmingham City, and Sunderland.
In addition to his technical skills, Doyle has also demonstrated his potential during a loan stint with Sheffield United, where he helped the team earn promotion from the Championship. This experience, coupled with his City roots, makes him an attractive prospect for clubs looking to bolster their midfield options.
As the transfer window progresses, Doyle’s future remains uncertain, but his availability has certainly caught the attention of several clubs eager to capitalize on his talents. Whether he stays at Wolves or makes a move elsewhere, Doyle’s journey will be one to watch closely.
