Wolverhampton Wanderers’ defender Matt Doherty has expressed his satisfaction with the team’s recent performances, despite their position in the bottom half of the Premier League table. Doherty highlighted the importance of maintaining momentum as the season draws to a close, aiming for a strong finish to ensure a positive pre-season.
Matt Doherty said: “I know we’re still in the bottom half, we’re still 13th, but that’s not the point at the moment, the connection seems to be there, the energy is there, and the results are there. Obviously not against Man City, but the results have been there for the last six games. We’re not going to lose confidence because of it, but we can understand that it was probably a game where, if we watch it back, we could have got something out of it. But let’s just be happy with what we’ve done over the second half of the season. It’s all about momentum. You take momentum into pre-season, and you want to finish the season strong. You want to go away on holiday and do whatever you’re doing feeling good about how the season finished.”
Doherty’s comments reflect a positive outlook on the team’s development and the importance of building on their current form. Despite the recent setback against Manchester City, he remains confident in the team’s ability to finish the season on a high note.
Matt Doherty continued: “If you lose the last four games of the season, it’s not a good feeling. Also, it will get the club thinking, ‘if we lose the last four, maybe we need to bring players in again’, so it’s important to finish off strong to cement your place in the team or in the squad for next season and finish the season how we want to start pre-season.”
Looking ahead, Doherty is already setting his sights on the upcoming pre-season, aiming to replicate the strong start he had last year. He acknowledges the potential for new additions to the squad but remains focused on the present and the immediate goal of finishing the season well.
Matt Doherty added: “The target for me is to just have a great pre-season. I had a great pre-season last season because I knew I was going to play the first couple games because Nelson (Semedo) was suspended. I had my head down, got into a really great condition and I had that goal because I knew I was going to start the season, so that will be the same goal for me to finish the season well, win the next three games and take that momentum into pre-season. Everybody will back themselves in pre-season to get into the team. I’m sure we could even have additions in the summer also. But I’m just thinking about the now, thinking about the next few games and how we’re going to finish the season, because I can take a lot of momentum into the internationals and then pre-season.”
Doherty’s focus on maintaining momentum and finishing the season strongly underscores the importance of consistency and preparation as Wolves look to build on their recent performances. His comments suggest a commitment to both personal and team development, setting the stage for a competitive pre-season and the potential for further squad enhancements.
