Manchester City faced a setback in their quest to retain the FA Youth Cup title as they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against Aston Villa in the final. The match, held at Villa Park, saw City take an early lead through Matty Warhurst’s goal, but Villa’s resilience and superior performance ultimately sealed their victory. This defeat marked the end of City’s impressive 27-game winning streak, leaving the team to reflect on their performance amidst Villa’s jubilant celebrations.
Reiss said: “In terms of developing the players these are the games they can learn from. Playing football is not just talent, it’s performing in front of a crowd like this. This is the main target. We wanted to win but you could see we were struggling. We need more games like this in the future. We didn’t lose the game just because we were not 100 per cent or crowd or pressure. Villa are a good team. We were hungry in training, the week looked good. We tried to increase the focus and workload. They dealt with the challenges better than us.”
Reiss also said: “As an academy coach you’re in between wanting to win and win titles and I believe in this for developing players. Sometimes you can take a lot of good things from a result like this to deal with it. What do they look like in a few days? To learn and deal with it. Nobody wants to lose but when it happens you can be a little bit thankful for this moment also because it’s an incredible opportunity to learn. They are really disappointed of course. You could see this and some players were shaking their heads and couldn’t believe it really. I don’t know why. Is it because we had more chances and it is not fair to lose this game? I don’t know. Sometimes you have this first idea. They were disappointed. But then in the changing room, maybe 40 minutes later, 45 minutes later, there were also some starting to smile a little bit like, ‘okay, but keep going.’ And also some players can also reach the next final, the Premier League [National] final. I am also not just a football coach and everything, I have also a heart. When I think about [facing Villa in the National final] a little bit, then of course it would be nice to play again.”
Despite the disappointment, Manchester City’s coaching staff remained optimistic, viewing the loss as a critical learning experience for the young players. The coaches emphasized the importance of playing under pressure and in front of large crowds, aspects that are crucial for player development. They acknowledged Villa’s strength and ability to handle challenges better, which played a significant role in their victory.
City’s players, although initially disheartened, began to show resilience and positivity shortly after the match, with some already looking forward to potential future encounters with Villa, particularly in the Premier League National final. The coaches are hopeful that this experience will serve as a valuable lesson, helping the players grow and improve in their football careers.
