Thiago Silva, the former Chelsea defender, had a successful stint with his boyhood club Fluminense after returning on a free transfer. He was tasked with saving the Brazilian outfit from relegation. As the captain, Silva led the team to seven unbeaten games in the Brasileirão, with six wins and one draw. However, a foot injury sidelined him for a month. Upon his return, he helped the team secure a four-point lead above the relegation zone.
Thiago Silva said “I came here with the intention of only staying for a year and it ended up being four years. Not just for me but for my family, too. My sons play for Chelsea so it’s a source of great pride to be a part of the Chelsea family – literally because my sons are here.”
After the season ended, Silva returned to west London to reunite with some familiar faces. He also took the time to watch Chelsea defeat Brentford 2-1 at Stamford Bridge. He then returned to Brazil for this year’s Campeonato Carioca. Despite Fluminense’s preparations for a match against Sampaio Corrêa, Silva found time to reach out to John Terry, a Chelsea legend.
Thiago Silva said “For John. Thank you for helping me during my time with this amazing club. Thank you @ThiagoSilva. What a player & what a great man.”
Silva has already made an appearance at Stamford Bridge since leaving Chelsea in the summer. He hinted at a possible return to the club in a different role in the future.
Thiago Silva said “I hope they can continue their careers here at this victorious club that many players wish to be part of. I think in everything I did here over the four years, I always gave my all. But, unfortunately, everything has a start, a middle and an end. That doesn’t mean that this is a definitive end. I hope to leave the door open so that in the near future I can return, albeit in another role here. But…it’s an indescribable love.”
