Eddie Howe, the Newcastle United boss, was confident that Alexander Isak would sign a new contract at St James’ Park when the time was right. Amidst questions about Isak’s future despite his having a contract until 2028 and interest from Arsenal, Howe believed that Isak would remain at Newcastle “long-term”.
Eddie Howe said “It made me laugh! There was no part of me or anyone who wanted to let Alex go. He was very much part of our long-term plans. Personally, I didn’t see that being an issue.”
Eddie Howe was asked if he needed to sell the club’s plans with clubs like Arsenal interested in Isak. He responded to these questions by emphasizing Isak’s motivation and aspirations for his career.
Eddie Howe said “I didn’t think necessarily at this stage that we had to. He was motivated and he wanted to do well. He had big aspirations for his career. He was still relatively young and still had a bright future ahead of him. I knew his desire to score goals was second to none. Every conversation I had about Newcastle concerning his future with him had been very positive. I would love for him, and other players, to be the man who contributed to us winning a trophy. That was the aim.”
Eddie Howe answered a series of questions on whether contract talks with Isak had begun or stalled. He clarified that they hadn’t started yet and brought up the focus on getting the team set up to maximize Isak’s goal-scoring opportunities.
Eddie Howe said “I didn’t think contract talks started. That was the issue. If you were going to say they stalled, how could they. They never started. He had a long contract. But I didn’t know too much more.”
