Aston Villa manager Unai Emery discussed his team’s performance and the weather conditions during the match against Southampton.
Unai Emery said “Very happy. Today was not good with the weather, it was raining and it was a rainy day. The supporters were here with us, helping us and trying to send the energy and I think today we played more or less getting better, getting confidence, understanding in our process how we can improve here and get points. Today with the victory and Wednesday as well we’re feeling better and the effort the players did today was fantastic. It was a difficult match. They were keeping possession, we needed to press them high, they were getting some chances as well but progressively we felt we were improving and we were better.”
Unai Emery elaborated on his team’s effective pressing strategy against Southampton.
Unai Emery said “The key was the clean sheet and being clinical in the first half. In the second half, on the transition we had a lot of chances. We were trying to stop them and threaten them with our game plan. We were being brave and we threatened them with our game plan and individually with our skills.”
Emery talked about his decision to start Jhon Duran and his performance on the field.
Unai Emery said “Fantastic. He is progressively helping us in everything, scoring goals and sometimes not scoring but working. We are very demanding with him, how tactically we want him to respond on the field. Today he did the work. The most important thing was how he worked today and then him scoring is better for the team. We’re happy to have him doing the work we need and Watkins had chances, he did very good work and we need to be consistent in 90 minutes. Today and Wednesday we were consistent, in the second half we controlled the match better than in the first half.”
Regarding Leon Bailey’s injury situation, Emery provided an update.
Unai Emery said “It is his hamstring. He didn’t feel it a lot, but I think minimum one, two, three weeks.”
Emery also commented on Jhon Duran’s qualities as a young player.
Unai Emery said “Yes, he is. We have to try and stop his impatient moments sometimes, that’s something natural because he’s young and he wants everything quick. The process he has, more or less we are doing. Sometimes faster, sometimes slower.”
