Enzo Maresca explained his philosophy of pushing players to reach their full potential by sharing the reasons behind his tough love approach, particularly relating to Noni Madueke’s performance. He expressed his intention to push Madueke for his own development and the benefit of the team, despite any temporary displeasure it may cause.
Enzo Maresca said “I said this the other day because I want the best for Noni and, probably, the only way to get the best from him is to push him every time.”
Maresca discussed his style of building close relationships with players while not shying away from honest and possibly unpopular opinions. He emphasized that his intention behind speaking candidly with players is rooted in care and the desire to see them improve.
Enzo Maresca said “The way I like to have relation with the players is to be quite close. You can see a little bit at Leicester I had a fantastic relationship with the players. I loved them. This is the way I like to have relation with the players. It’s the same thing I’m trying to do here. The problem is when you say something they don’t like, they think you don’t want to be close, but that’s a way to show them I take care of them.”
Referring to his comments about Reece’s leadership, Maresca further illustrated his commitment to player development, emphasizing that his critiques are not about establishing authority but rather about fostering player growth.
Enzo Maresca said “It’s not for [showing who is boss]. The same thing happened with Reece. When I talked about his leadership, that’s because I want the best for him and I want him to improve.”
