Ex-Liverpool sporting director Jorg Schmadtke has expressed his views on the potential move of Mohamed Salah to Saudi Arabia. Schmadtke, who only recently departed from the club, mentioned the possibility of Salah heading to the Saudi Pro League in the future.
Jorg Schmadtke said, “I don’t know, but it is entirely possible that this will happen.”
With Salah’s contract set to expire at the end of the current season and no new deal in sight, speculation is rife about his next move. The former Chelsea player, now 32, has been linked with a transition to the lucrative Saudi Pro League, particularly after Al-Ittihad reportedly made a record-breaking £150 million bid for him.
Mohamed Salah has been relatively open about his thoughts regarding his future at Liverpool, especially following their notable victory against Manchester United.
Mohamed Salah said, “Nobody in the club has talked to me about contracts. It is not up to me, it is up to the club. As you know, this is my last year with the club and I want to enjoy it. I don’t want to think about it; I feel I am free to play football – we will see what happens next year.”
Despite the allure of Saudi riches, there’s still a chance that a substantial offer from Liverpool could tempt him to stay, especially if he wishes to maintain his status at a top-level club. Salah is not the only Liverpool player facing contract uncertainties. Teammates Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also entering the final 12 months of their contracts. The situation regarding these players has been elusive, with no clear updates on ongoing negotiations.
Slot has commented generally on the performance and contract scenarios of the players, emphasizing that their current good form is unrelated to their contractual situations.
Slot said, “It’s also not sure that if they perform not as good anymore that has anything to do with the contract situation. At the moment, all three of them are in a good place, they all perform really, really, really well. There are ongoing discussions between what Virgil said are the people he had to talk with, and that’s not me, as you know. I talk to him about other things. Let’s wait and see.”
