Unai Emery explains why he substituted midfielder Amadou Onana amid injury fears

Unai Emery

In a recent match where Aston Villa secured a win over Bologna, Unai Emery explained his decision to substitute midfielder Amadou Onana. Emery cited both tactical reasons and Onana experiencing some pain. The substitution at halftime saw Ross Barkley take Onana’s place, leading to Villa gaining a lead not long after. John McGinn scored from a free-kick in the 55th minute, and Jhon Duran extended the lead by turning in a cross from Morgan Rogers nine minutes later. This win maintains Villa’s lead in their Champions League phase, having previously beaten BSC Young Boys and Bayern Munich.

Unai Emery said, “Tactical decision but as well he had some pain. Not clear. I decided tactically and also not take a risk with him. We are playing seriously, we are playing focused, responsible and the team is progressing and mature in everything. We tried to break the press man to man. We conceded some things in the first 15 minutes but then reacted very well.”

Villa’s solid performance at home in Europe highlights their progression and maturity this season. Emery’s strategy, despite initial concessions, effectively countered Bologna’s press, resulting in a decisive victory.
