Dejan Kulusevski played a pivotal role in Tottenham’s emphatic 4-1 victory over West Ham. The Sweden international scored his first home goal of the season, helping Spurs bounce back from an early setback after Mohammed Kudus initially put West Ham in the lead. Tottenham took control shortly after with a series of goals, including Kulusevski’s effort that found the net after hitting both posts. Yves Bissouma added to the lead with an Alphonse Areola own goal, and Son Heung-min secured a fourth goal. Although Son nearly bagged a second goal after the restart, striking the post, the drama continued as Kudus received a red card for violent conduct. Pape Matar Sarr, who was involved in the red card incident, made a significant impact with an assist and energetic performance.
Postecoglou substituted James Maddison for Sarr at half-time, which was a tactical decision due to Maddison’s injury concerns.
Ange Postecoglou said, “I just felt West Ham ask you certain questions in midfield areas and I just felt Pape’s running power would help us in the second half. They obviously worked hard in the first half, and I thought he [Sarr] could give us some real energy. I thought he did really well and he gave us a platform to be really threatening every time we went forward and clinical in our football.”
Dejan Kulusevski echoed his coach’s sentiments, praising the impact that Sarr had on the game.
Dejan Kulusevski said, “It’s hard to do both things all the time, so it was good that we got Pape in and I think he changed the game for us.”
