The Albion midfielder fired a brilliant late winner as his nation edged out Greece 2-1 in a friendly. It was his first goal for the national team. Germany fans jeered when their side trailed at half-time but went home happy.
Pascal Gross said: “The fact that you can turn the game around is also a positive because that can also happen during the tournament. It was a good test that you stay calm, that you continue to believe in victory. The fans at home can be a big plus for us. They can support us, we will give everything so that there is no reason to whistle. But if things get difficult, if you can support us then it would help us enormously.”
Gross became the second oldest player to score a first goal for the national team, and the oldest for unified Germany, as he struck at the age of 32 years and 358 days. Eintracht Frankfurt winger Richard Kress was 36 when he opened his international account for West Germany against Northern Ireland in a World Cup qualifier on May 10, 1961.
