Liverpool was ready to rescue David Rocastle from his Leeds United torment – if Howard Wilkinson would allow him to leave. And if he did end up at Anfield that would have meant that Paul Stewart would end up at Leeds. Rocastle was a championship winner with Arsenal before making a £2 million move to Elland Road but his time at Leeds had been difficult and the 26-year-old had seen only a handful of first-team matches come his way.
Souness who watched “Rocky” perform well and score in Leeds’ 4-1 reserve team win at Anfield a day earlier had been an admirer of the former England star. Stewart, 28, whose transfer to Manchester City had collapsed had been out of the squad and was playing in reserves.
Graeme Souness said, “If a quality player becomes available, then I am always interested.”
