How to interpret Mahrez’s revelation – ” I could have been at Arsenal” ?
[hr]
Algeria international Riyad Mahrez reveals he was close to completing a move to Arsenal before the move was blocked by Leicester City shortly after winning the Premier League title.
Mahrez played a key role in helping the Foxes secure a first-ever Premier League title in 2016, which earned him the PFA Player of the Year accolade as well as interest from some of Europe’s elite. While N’Golo Kante earned a dream move to Chelsea after winning the title, the Algerian had to wait two more years to secure a move to Manchester City.
Mahrez said “For me, it’s clear that I lost two years at the highest level. I lost two years! Because instead of arriving at City at 27, I could have been there at 24, 25. Leicester blocked me. They told me: ‘You’re not leaving, you’re not leaving’. My agent had spoken to [Arsene] Wenger who really wanted me. It was nearly all done with Arsenal in 2016. I was really frustrated. It wasn’t easy to go from being the best player in the Premier League to being a part of a team fighting against relegation.”

Premier League Museum Editor Notes: Riyad Mahrez had previously revealed that it is “difficult to live with” playing from the bench at Manchester City. It seems something is not right within Manchester City dressing room this season. Starting from unhappiness of coach Pep, with Bayern Munich stories appearing in media, two consecutive days have passed with stories of Algerian Riyad Mahrez expressing his dissatisfaction with. fringe role in the squad.

Insight into Alvaro Morata’s English Premier League experience ?
[hr]
Ex Chelsea player Alvaro Morata has revealed he lost confidence in his abilities during his troubled spell at Stamford Bridge and was driven ‘crazy’ by his team-mates as he began to suspect they didn’t believe in him. Remembering the days at Chelsea, Morata said ” I was playing some games in England and I had the feeling that when I got into space, my team-mates looked at me and I knew they thought I wouldn’t do anything good with the ball. It was driving me crazy. I had a bad time.”
Morata opened the 2017-18 Premier League campaign with six goals in six games, four of which were from Cesar Azpilicueta assists as the Spanish pair appeared to be forming an almost telepathic connection. However, Morata scored just four more goals by the end of 2017, and just once in the new year before the season came to a close with Chelsea finishing fifth.Their campaign ended with FA Cup victory, and though Morata contributed valuably with goals in the quarters and semi-finals, he played just one minute of the final, with Antonio Conte starting Eden Hazard and Olivier Giroud up front.
In 2018/2019 season, Sarri came in where the coach initially persisted with Morata, but five goals in 16 league appearances – a goal every 188 minutes – had seen Hazard become the preferred attacking option. Soon Morata became more synonymous with big chances he missed than goals he scored.
Overall, Morata scored 16 goals in 47 Premier League games before joining Atletico Madrid on an 18-month loan deal in January. The Spanish frontman has since hit form in Madrid and insists he’s moved on from the unhappiest time of his career.

Premier League Museum Editor Notes: Alvaro Morata is not the only big reputation premier league striker who could not do well. We list below 10 more who could not cope with physical and sometimes unlucky moments faced by players in English Premier League. With Morata, many reasons have been attributed apart from just striker missing chances. Chelsea employed rigid tactical managers with different styles than the technical systems under which Morata had played. Like many Spanish players, Morata thrives in free flowing systems. Chelsea, on the other hand, are married to tactics-heavy, cerebral managers.
Other premier league strikers who came with big reputation but did not work out –
- ANDRIY SHEVCHENKO (CHELSEA, 2006-09)
- FERNANDO MORIENTES (LIVERPOOL, 2005-06)
- HERNAN CRESPO (CHELSEA, 2003-06)
- RADAMEL FALCAO (Manchester United, 2014-15; Chelsea, 2015-16)
- ROBERTO SOLDADO (TOTTENHAM, 2013-15)
- DIEGO FORLAN (MANCHESTER UNITED, 2002-04)

Why is Nemanja Matic plotting exit from Manchester United ?
[hr]
Nemanja Matic could be on his way out of Manchester United soon, with there being a distinct possibility that the Serbian is sold during the upcoming January transfer in itself.
With Scott McTominay and Fred both having formed a strong partnership which has seen praise from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Matic has fallen way behind the midfield line. Paul Pogba is set to return soon, which means Matics’ chances of appearing will take an even bigger blow going forward.
Matic appeared to question Solskjaer’s tactics back in September when he stated that inability to challenge in the league would fall over his shoulders. Matic said “The coach must opt for the team that will fight for the title and if he does not win, he bears the responsibility.” He then lauded the Norwegian for promoting youth in the club a few weeks later, probably in a bid to get in his good books.

Premier League Museum Editor Notes: We believe the midfielder wants to garner regular game time ahead of the UEFA European Championships, with Serbia in contention to make the finals next summer. Matic who is considered prodigal son of Jose Mourinho, has gradually dropped in stature once Ole replaced Jose at Manchester United. So much so, that the Serb had reportedly indulged in showdown talks with the Manchester United boss over his future. With Scott McTominay being preferred as the holding midfielder by Solskjaer, Matic now remains a backup at best.
