Saturday papers in the UK covered the news surrounding the Norwich’s postponed match against Liverpool at Anfield to give more time for the Reds to recover, Spurs’ desperate attempt to get back to the winning ways, Paul Mcgrath was set to take legal action against Alex Ferguson and Coventry City signed West Brom striker on loan.

Liverpool manager Graeme Souness was agonizing over whether to drop Bruce Grobbelaar for the upcoming showdown with league leaders Norwich at Anfield. Grobbelaar was sent off with the score at 2-2 in their European tie against Spartak Moscow which Liverpool eventually lost 4-2. He was at fault for the second goal, a mistake that was said to have infuriated Souness, he had kept England under 21 goalkeeper David James on standby.

Tottenham was once again set to turn to the leadership qualities of Gary Mabbutt at Wimbledon tomorrow. The experienced former England defender was to make his first premier league appearance of the season at Selhurst Park, called up to face one of his oldest foes as Spurs’ season threatened to slide into disaster. Without a premier league win in five games, Spurs were then four places from the bottom of the table, a point ahead of their opponents.

In an extremely sporting gesture, Norwich City had agreed to postpone their match against Anfield to allow their opponents one extra day to recover following their grueling European Cup match against Moscow earlier in the week. This could have potentially meant that Norwich would lose their position at the top of the league temporarily if Blackburn Rovers were to win their match against Manchester United the previous day. Liverpool’s record goal-scoring striker Ian Rush was still unlikely to make it after picking up a groin injury in the midweek tie.

The Republic of Ireland and Aston Villa defender Paul Mcgrath had decided to sue Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson over allegations about Dubliner’s days at Old Trafford. The former United star instructed a Dublin law firm to instigate legal proceedings against Ferguson for his reference he made to Mcgrath in his book Six years at United. Ferguson alleged that he was forced to bring in a parish priest to talk to Mcgrath about his “problem”. Mcgrath said “Ferguson wanted me out of Old Trafford so badly that he tried to make me redundant… he’s making me out to be some brainless looney on a self destruct road to ruin.”

Paul Williams, the 6 ft 4 inch Northern Ireland international striker was set to be on the Coventry City bench after joining the sky blues on a month’s loan deal from West Bromwich Albion with a view to permanent £50000 transfer.
