In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are going to revive some of the moments from past which will revive moments of the golden history of the league.
Sunday’s papers in the UK covered Everton manager Howard Kendall’s public vote of confidence for Dave Watson, Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel admitting Euro success hangover, a new strike partnership for England made out of the premier league and Leeds’ boss Howard Wilkinson targeting league success after a dramatic European comeback.
Everton boss Howard Kendall talked up the qualities of his defender Dave Watson after England boss picked Arsenal’s Tony Adams ahead of Watson in the international squad. Kendall believed that Watson should have been in the squad to challenge Adams. Despite having not received a senior England call up for almost four years, Kendall called Watson as “Soccer’s Mr. Reliable” and applauded the consistency that Watson had provided to the Merseyside outfit.
Manchester United goalkeeper and Danish International Peter Schmeichel admitted that he was struggling to find the happiness of playing football at Manchester United and he had not yet fully recovered from winning the Euro 1992 a few months earlier. He said on the difficult start to the season with United, “It was hard. it took me some weeks to get back and be happy playing again. I didn’t have a preseason and I wasn’t feeling 100% fitness-wise at the start of the season.”
England manager Graham Taylor was least worried about replacing his top scorer Gary Linekar as he had found a unique solution at the top by using premier league’s most prolific scorers that season in a partnership, Alan Shearer of Blackburn Rovers and Ian Wright of Arsenal. Shearer was already into double figures in terms of goals scored in the premier league whereas Wright had seven to his name. Linekar’s most profitable time with three lions came when he partnered Peter Beardsley and the new pair would hope to do the same job.
Howard Wilkinson was in a bullish mood after his side completed a dramatic comeback into the European championship after winning against the German side Stuttgart in the replay at Barcelona. Leeds’ coach Wilkinson said that justice was served and now the focus was back on defending their championship in England.
