Alexander Isak believes Newcastle United ‘deserved’ all three points after his late winner in their 1-0 win over Fulham sent St. James’ Park into raptures. After the final whistle, Isak was delighted with his impact on the game off the substitute bench and went through his thought process as he entered the pitch.

Alexander Isak said: “Very pleased. It was a tough game but at the end of the day, I think we deserved the three points and I was very happy to be able to score that one as well. When I was coming on, I was just thinking about how I could give the team more energy, to keep the momentum and to keep on attacking. I had a feeling the chance would arrive and I was in the right place at the right time.”

Having scored in front of the Gallowgate End, the 23-year-old admitted that it’s important to keep a fan connection after being out for over five months with a thigh injury.

Alexander Isak said: “Yeah, that was definitely special. Those late goals, late winners, are always the best goals and just to be able to score that one at home in front of our incredible fans, it was a special feeling. It’s been frustrating [being injured for so long] but I think it’s helped a lot that the team have been doing really well. It’s made me a bit more calm so I’m happy – I’ve come back to a team where they’re in a very good place and I’m happy to contribute to that. I’m using every opportunity, every training session, every match to get fitter and then obviously it’s up to the coach to decide when the time is right [for me to start].”

Ahead of Crystal Palace next weekend, the Swedish international noted that they just need to keep playing as they are to keep winning matches.

Alexander Isak said: “I think the team has shown in many games that our mentality is right – we always stick together and fight until the end. I think you can sense that in the team, and that’s very important. Every win we can take is good, it’ll keep giving us confidence and the team has been good now for a really long time so we just have to keep going in the same direction.”
