James Maddison could rejoin his Leicester City team-mates in training in a week’s time but manager Brendan Rodgers has called for caution over the club’s star midfielder. But the City boss also knows what a difference Maddison makes to his side. He felt the 26-year-old could have had a significant impact in Friday’s 2-1 loss at Liverpool.

Brendan Rodgers said: “He has had good news from the scan, which is positive for us. The medical team will work with him over the course of the next seven-to-ten days to build him up. Hopefully we will get no reaction from that. Then if that’s the case, he can then rejoin our training group. We have to be mindful as well that it’s been eight weeks or so since he played a game. Everton was his last real game, so he’s not going to come in and be right up to speed straight away. But just to have that quality and that creativity and that personality, it takes this team to a different dimension when you have that level of player. I’m pretty sure he’d have enjoyed himself. We just need to get him back and hopefully he can then be really important for us for the second part of the season.”

Defeat to Liverpool means City have lost three and won one of the four Premier League matches Maddison has missed this season. That sole victory came at home to Leeds in October, when Maddison was absent through suspension.
