Southampton sold Tim Flowers to Blackburn in a record deal for a goalkeeper for roughly £3.75 million deal. And they decided to beef up their squad with multiple signings from out of favour players at other clubs then bringing in quality players. They brought in six first-team players for less money then they received for Flowers with likes of Paul Allen from Spurs, Neil Heaney from Arsenal and Dave Beasant from Chelsea the big names.
The Saints were practically saved from going down by the magical season Matt Le Tissier had as he scored 18 goals for the club. But the squad did not have enough quality to move higher up in the premier league despite the numbers coming in the squad.
