On a quiet Friday from footballing sense, the headlines were made by Teddy Sheringham who agreed a £2.l million move to Tottenham from Nottingham Forest as Terry Venables looked to have finally got a replacement of Gary Lineker. Lineker’s departure at the end of previous season had haunted Spurs during a dismal start that has brought only two points and goals from four Premier League matches. Sheringham was expected to move in alongside Gordon Durie and make his debut against Ipswich at Portman Road.
In other smaller headlines, media marveled over Eric Cantona’s seven goal contribution in five matches. They praised his marvelous scoring touch and ability to create opportunities for his team-mates.
Concerns were also raised for the dons – Wimbledon who made a dreadful start to the new Premier League season, losing their first three matches. They went down 1-2 at Leeds on August 15 and had since suffered home defeats by Coventry and newly-promoted Ipswich. Only a Dean Holdsworth equaliser after 74 minutes earned the Dons a 2-2 draw at Sheffield United on Tuesday night to give them 1st point of the season.
