Welcome the Hammers! West Ham pip Portsmouth on goal difference to gain automatic promotion to Premier League
The race to reach the premier league via automatic promotion took a dramatic turn on the last day when West Ham clinched the promotion via a late 90th-minute goal from Clive Allen. They beat Cambridge 2-0 and finished on same points as Portsmouth who had scored 80 goals that season to West Ham’s 81.
Wild scenes of jubilation were sparked in the end when the results of all the games were confirmed as West Ham went straight back into the premier league after getting relegated a year earlier. The teams that went into the playoffs were Portsmouth, Tranmere, Swindon and Leicester.
