Eddie Howe has revealed that Joelinton has been playing through the pain barrier during his impressive run of form in recent weeks. The £40million man was forced off early during the victory at Leeds and is now facing assessment during the club’s training camp in Jeddah next week. Jamaal Lascelles was also taken off with a muscle injury at Elland Road but both the skipper and Joelinton walked back to the bus unaided and were in good spirits after the victory.
Eddie Howe said: “Joelinton has been suffering with a groin problem since I arrived. We’ve been managing him through the games. It’s a problem where he’s been going down in games related to that groin and today it’s come to that so that was a big disappointment with the form that he’s been in. Jamaal Lascelles, that’s a difficult one. He went down with his hamstring. He went down quite awkwardly so we’ll have to assess that so obviously a huge blow when we were stretched anyway so that was a huge disappointment.”
Both players have over two weeks to be fit for the next game against Everton. Newcastle were also dealt a blow after the hour mark when Paul Dummett went down with what looked like cramp.
Eddie Howe said: “Paul Dummett, less of a surprise, he had limited training time since he’s come back from injury and I think there was a lot of fatigue in that so I’m not sure how serious that one is but we’ll see. Hopefully, it’s not too bad.”
