Andoni Iraola
Bournemouth’s recent defensive struggles have been a cause for concern as the team has conceded seven set-piece goals in their last three outings. Despite maintaining solid defense during open play, these lapses have significantly impacted their performance. Manager Andoni Iraola has acknowledged this issue and is determined to rectify it as they prepare to face Everton.
Andoni Iraola said: “I think it’s our main issue now. We have to focus on improving defensively. It doesn’t matter the goals we score. I think we are scoring a lot of goals, we are having a lot of chances. We’ve scored two goals each. We should score more, I think. But you are conceding a lot of goals, in this case they have been set plays and probably at the beginning of the season we were not scoring as many but we were defending much better and introducing a lot more points for us. We’ve never been in these three years I think a very tall club and we’ve been very good in this aspect. But it’s true that this season we were not expecting to suffer, but we could think that could be a problem for us and we were dealing very well. I think in the first 10 games I think we had only two goals against in set plays and we were like we are doing well. The last three games, it has destroyed all the statistics. I think we’ve conceded seven goals in three games in set plays. So it means we’ve been out of the games or it has put us the game is very difficult and it’s definitely something that concerns us because at the end is I feel last two games you concede goals and it looks like we’ve defended very badly and I don’t think we’ve conceded a lot of chances. But it’s situations that we need to improve.”
Iraola’s comments highlight the team’s unexpected struggle with set-piece situations this season. Previously, Bournemouth had maintained a commendable defensive record in this area, conceding only two goals from set plays in their first ten games. However, the recent spate of goals conceded from set pieces has skewed their defensive statistics and affected their ability to stay competitive in matches.
The manager’s focus on defensive improvement indicates a strategic shift to address these vulnerabilities. While Bournemouth has been effective in creating scoring opportunities, the inability to defend set pieces has overshadowed their attacking prowess. As they gear up for their clash with Everton, Iraola’s emphasis on defensive solidity will be crucial in reversing their recent fortunes.
