Sunderland have made an impressive start to the Premier League season, currently sitting fourth in the table, a position that has sparked discussions about their potential to secure a European qualification spot. Former England international David Bentley has expressed optimism about the Black Cats’ chances, while ex-Premier League manager Tim Sherwood remains skeptical. Sunderland’s performance has defied pre-season expectations, with Regis Le Bris’ team losing only two matches so far, against Burnley and Manchester United, and accumulating 19 points from their first 11 fixtures.
David Bentley said: “I think it is [a possibility]… If they continue in the same rich vein of form, why not? Europe could be a possibility. Go on, Sunderland!”
Tim Sherwood said: “They will not go down, we know that. They’ve had such a good start. Will they finish in the top five? No. I don’t think they’ve got enough quality to be able to do that. But I always said Leicester would never win the Premier League right up until two weeks before they did, so I’ve been wrong before, very recently…”
Darren Bent said: “Sunderland, if they had won last night [against Everton] could have gone second. I know they drew so they’re still fourth, which is still incredible, but I still think – I mean, it’s early – but there’s no way on the planet that Sunderland are going down. That’s for a fact. But I just wonder when Regis Le Bris’ expectations will start to change, because I understand, still now only ten games, in it might be a little bit of, ‘Right, listen, we still don’t want to go down’, but it’s gonna get to a point where, say, they’re bouncing around the top ten – maybe a tenth, sixth, in around there – I wonder if his expectations might shift a little bit and he goes, ‘You know, what? If they finish 11th, brilliant. When you look at the newly promoted sides, how they’ve done the last couple of seasons, you’d go, ‘Oh my goodness’. You’d probably say 17th, they’d snap your hand off. Because of how Sunderland have started, I think if they finish 11th, that’d be a fantastic season. It gives them something to kind of feed off for next season, because they’ll attract players I’ve got no doubt. Playing up there in front of those fans…”
Sunderland’s current position in the league has certainly raised eyebrows, especially considering their recent promotion. While Bentley’s optimism highlights the potential for European competition, Sherwood’s cautionary stance underscores the challenges ahead. The team’s ability to maintain their form will be crucial as they navigate the remainder of the season. Darren Bent’s comments further emphasize the importance of managing expectations and recognizing the achievements of newly promoted teams. Sunderland’s performance thus far has set a solid foundation, and their continued success could indeed attract new talent and bolster their future prospects.
