Sunderland have made a remarkable return to the Premier League, currently sitting in fourth place after 11 games. With 19 points, five wins, and only two losses, the Black Cats have surprised many with their performance. Despite facing one of the highest numbers of shots in the league, Sunderland’s defense has been resilient, conceding just 10 goals. This defensive solidity has been a key factor in their early success, with Granit Xhaka and his teammates embracing the challenge of “suffering” for results.
Granit Xhaka said: “I used that word because the promoted team has always suffered over the last six or seven years. We are suffering on the pitch right now, too. It is fun to suffer for the results. I give a little speech before most of Sunderland’s matches. We love defending. That is the difference! That is why we have healthy stability and exceptional balance. Very few teams create chances against us.”
Despite their impressive league position, data from Opta Analyst paints a different picture of Sunderland’s performances. According to their “expected points” metrics, Sunderland should be positioned much lower in the table, around 15th place. This discrepancy is attributed to the team’s low possession statistics, averaging just 43.2% this season, and their tendency to concede more chances than they create. However, Sunderland’s defensive resilience and the outstanding performances of players like goalkeeper Robin Roefs have been crucial in maintaining their current standing.
The Analyst reported: “The teams currently in fourth (Sunderland), fifth (Tottenham), and sixth (Aston Villa) in the Premier League should actually be 15th, 16th, and 19th based on the quality and quantity of chances they have created and conceded. The underlying data behind their performances is far worse than their results.”
The Black Cats’ ability to perform well out of possession has been a defining feature of their play this season. Their unbeaten record at the Stadium of Light further highlights their strength at home, making it a challenging venue for visiting teams. Newcastle legend Alan Shearer expressed his surprise at Sunderland’s performance, acknowledging the difficulty any team would face at the Stadium of Light this season.
Alan Shearer said: “I wouldn’t say I am worried about the derby against Sunderland in a few weeks, but I’ve been mightily surprised at how well Sunderland have done. I don’t think even their most hardened supporters would tell you that they’d be where they are in the league and what they’re doing so far this season. I doubt Arsenal will have a tougher game this season than the one they had at the weekend.”
As Sunderland continue their Premier League campaign, their ability to maintain this level of performance will be closely watched. The team’s resilience and commitment to their defensive strategy have been pivotal in their early success, and they will hope to build on this foundation as the season progresses.
