Florian Wirtz
Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has expressed his confidence in Florian Wirtz’s potential success at Liverpool. Despite the young German midfielder’s slow start in English football, Alonso believes Wirtz will soon demonstrate his exceptional talent at Anfield. Wirtz, who played under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen, has yet to score or assist in the league, but Alonso remains optimistic about his future contributions to Liverpool.
Xabi Alonso said: “I have no doubts. It is just a matter of time. And a few years in Leverkusen. He needs to adapt but he is a really special player. He is very special and probably one of the reasons I’m here now, is because of Flo, so I’m very grateful to Flo.”
Alonso, who famously lifted the Champions League trophy with Liverpool in 2005, shared his thoughts on Wirtz’s adaptation process and his own return to Anfield. The Spanish coach acknowledged that while Wirtz is yet to make a significant impact, his unique abilities will eventually shine through. Alonso also reflected on his own journey, crediting Wirtz as a pivotal figure in his managerial career.
Alonso added: “We haven’t spoken about [the emotion of the return], but we have spoken about the team, the club. He has to have his own feelings and enjoy it his own way. So I am not going to say how he needs to feel it. So he needs to enjoy that moment because it is nice to be back and for him it is nice. He is good. He didn’t play (at the weekend) because of the context of the game but he is available for any number of minutes. Tomorrow he may play and after the injury he had we need his qualities; he has great qualities. He is in a new stage for him both sporting, physically and mentally. We need to give him what he needs because he is an exceptional player that we have in our squad.”
Alonso emphasized the importance of allowing Wirtz to experience his return to Anfield in his own way, without imposing expectations. He highlighted the midfielder’s readiness to contribute following a recent injury, noting that Wirtz’s physical and mental development is crucial at this stage. Alonso’s remarks underscore his belief in Wirtz’s potential to become a key asset for Liverpool, given time and support.
