Danny Welbeck
Wayne Rooney, the former Manchester United and Everton forward, has expressed his support for Danny Welbeck’s potential recall to the England national team. Rooney highlighted Welbeck’s recent performances and contributions, suggesting that England manager Thomas Tuchel should consider him for the squad.
Wayne Rooney said: “He scores goals, he works hard, he’s having a purple patch and he’s put himself in a position where Thomas Tuchel will definitely have to look at him. Behind Harry Kane, he is the most in-form England striker. He’s given himself a chance.”
Rooney emphasized the importance of having a fit and in-form Harry Kane for England’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania. With England having already secured qualification, the focus is on maintaining momentum and preparing for the World Cup in North America and Mexico next summer. Rooney believes that Welbeck’s current form could be a valuable asset for the national team.
Rooney continued: “He was brilliant, such a lovely person. When he played he pressed really high, he was aggressive, he was quick to get to the ball, really clever, good feet and he scored goals. I do have to say the best thing about Daniel is his mother used to bring me chicken and rice every Thursday. It was so nice. I used to always look forward to that.”
Welbeck, who made his professional breakthrough at Manchester United during Rooney’s peak years, has shown resilience throughout his career, overcoming injuries to deliver consistent performances for Brighton & Hove Albion. Rooney’s comments reflect not only his admiration for Welbeck’s on-field abilities but also a personal connection, reminiscing about the support he received from Welbeck’s family during their time at Manchester United.
Rooney added: “He’s been on fire. Whenever anyone does well, we are all behind them, supporting them. I am pleased for him because he had injuries throughout his career that hampered him, but he seems to be able to stay fit now and he has shown his ability and what he can do.”
Welbeck’s resurgence at Brighton has caught the attention of many, including Rooney, who sees him as a potential key player for England. As the national team prepares for its final qualifiers, the possibility of Welbeck’s inclusion could provide an additional attacking option for Tuchel, especially given his experience and current form.
